About the Opportunity

Smart Education is delighted to invite applications for an exceptional and highly specialist position supporting a young pupil with complex medical needs and multi-sensory impairments (MSI) in the Selly Oak area. This long-term, one-to-one role requires a dedicated, patient, and skilled Qualified Teacher (QTS) with an authenticated specialism in Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI). This specialism is essential and non-negotiable due to the complexity of the pupil’s needs and the specialist nature of the provision.

You will be joining a committed, multi-disciplinary network of therapists, medical professionals, SEND specialists, and Smart Education support staff, all working collaboratively to ensure the pupil achieves the highest possible quality of education, developmental progress, and emotional well-being.

Role Overview

The role involves delivering individualised, high-quality teaching that is carefully adapted to meet the pupil’s sensory profile, learning preferences, communication methods, and medical requirements. You will be responsible for designing and implementing structured lessons that promote engagement, independence, and meaningful progress, all while working within a safe, secure, and nurturing environment.

As the primary educator for this pupil, you will act not only as a teacher, but also as an advocate, communicator, and creative problem solver who can adapt teaching strategies with sensitivity and expertise. The ability to respond dynamically to sensory cues, medical considerations, and emotional changes is fundamental.

The successful educator will work within a scheduled shift pattern of 2:30pm–7:30pm, Monday to Friday, offering consistency and stability, which are crucial for this child’s routine and regulation.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide specialist MSI teaching, tailoring every aspect of learning to the pupil’s sensory and cognitive needs.
• Create, deliver, and continually refine individualised education programmes, ensuring they are accessible, engaging, and structured.
• Use a range of sensory-aware teaching methods, such as tactile approaches, object-based learning, multi-sensory storytelling, and adapted communication systems.
• Work collaboratively with a broad multi-disciplinary team (MDT), including speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, medical professionals, and SEND coordinators, to maintain a fully holistic approach.
• Attend and contribute to MDT meetings, EHCP reviews, and case discussions, providing clear written and verbal feedback on progress and upcoming goals.
• Establish both short-term and long-term targets, monitor outcomes closely, and maintain accurate records tracking development, engagement, responses, and adaptations.
• Safeguard the pupil’s well-being by following all care plans, risk assessments, medication protocols, and safety guidance associated with their medical needs.
• Use evidence-based approaches to monitor progress and adapt strategies as the pupil grows, changes, and develops new skills.
• Support the pupil’s communication, interaction, emotional regulation, independence skills, and sensory integration in every teaching session.
• Ensure every activity is aligned with medical advice and specific risk management strategies, always prioritising safety.
• Build a trusting, emotionally secure relationship with the pupil, recognising their unique personality, strengths, and communication style.

Essential Criteria

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with an official specialism in Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI) – this requirement is mandatory.
• Demonstrable experience working with pupils who have complex medical needs, multi-sensory impairments, or severe communication and sensory challenges.
• A strong understanding of inclusive education, adaptive teaching methods, sensory integration, and differentiated learning approaches.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work closely with families, therapists, and external agencies.
• A reflective, empathetic, and resilient approach to teaching, with the ability to remain calm and responsive in dynamic situations.
• A solid understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to promoting the welfare and protection of children and young people.
• Confidence in planning, recording, and evaluating progress in an organised and structured manner.

Desirable Experience and Additional Skills

While not essential, the following skills and qualifications are highly advantageous:

• Additional training or qualifications in SEND, MSI, blind/VI education, deafblind communication, or sensory integration.
• Experience working with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) methods, tactile communication systems, object cues, symbol systems, or specialist communication technologies.
• Familiarity with tactile, auditory, and kinaesthetic learning approaches, and the ability to integrate these into daily teaching practice.
• Experience working in specialist MSI settings, sensory-rich environments, or complex medical care contexts.
• Knowledge of strategies for supporting emotional regulation, anxiety, sensory overload, and communication breakdowns.
